Cocktails, spice and everything nice
As we all know, the Great British public love a good curry, so much so, it has become a national food in the UK. This autumn the team at Smiths Hotel at Gretna Green wants to heat you up and celebrate some of Britain’s most popular dishes with you and your friends or family.
Join us on the 9th November for a special evening full of flavour and spice.
What kinds of curry do smiths offer?
In Smiths hotel, our chefs, as traditional curry heirs, prepare fresh, organic ingredients to create our own curry recipes to excite your taste buds and warm your heart. Traditionally, Indian housewives would prepare their own curry pastes from scratch instead of using a pre-prepared paste. Curry powder doesn’t exist in India! There are many, many different varieties of curry, so recipe-specific spice mixes are more common. Our team at Smiths have followed the traditional techniques and created their own spice recipes to offer you an authentic flavour.
Why are curry and cocktails a good match?
Whether you are a big fan of Chicken Tikka Masala (we use authentic Punjabi Dhaba chicken to make it) or feeling adventurous for Beef Rendang (Indonesian coconut curry), great cocktails are the perfect partners to complement your journey through these delicious flavours.
Although some people consider a fresh beer as a perfect partner for curry, we believe the right cocktail is better! Our bar team have developed an impressive cocktail list to complement our own exciting curry recipes.
To balance the spice in curry, the cocktails need to be fruity and refreshing. Chambord Fizz and Classic Champagne Cocktails are just sweet enough to cool the taste buds; Larios Strawberry Gin normally mixed with tonic can add a much-needed touch of fruit to the mix; to pep up your party night you could choose one of our classic creations with a modern twist, such as the Long Island Iced Tea, Mango Margarita or Raspberry Martini for a great finish to your special and hopefully spicy night.
Whether you are a ‘Cosmo’ girl with a penchant for Punjab food or an ‘old-fashioned’ guy with a taste of Tikka; Smiths at Gretna Green will make the ideal dinner date for you!
Come join us for a relaxing night and savour the flavour!
Friday 9 November, 7pm till late
To find out or to book, give us a call on: 01461 337 007
Tickets £25per* person, includes cocktail on arrival, dinner and live entertainment*£10 requires on booking

Add an English twist to your big day
Planning on marrying in Scotland but want to add an English twist to your big day? The team here at Gretna Green have come up with a few ideas to help you plan a St George’s themed wedding.
St George’s Day celebrates the life of St George (patron saint of England) who by all accounts was quite the romantic. According to legend, St George bravely fought and slayed a dragon to save a princess.
If you’re a groom, don’t worry, we don’t suggest tackling a mythical beast to impress your bride to be. We suggest choosing a special gift and luckily, here at Gretna Green, we have loads to choose from. As well as our range of Scottish products, we stock a great range of ‘made in England’ gifts at our Gretna Green Visitor Centre from clothing and accessories to beautifully handcrafted jewellery. Keeping with the English twist, treat your new bride to a chic Grafea bag which are lovingly created in Manchester.
For a wedding fit for a knight and his princess, the theme has to be planned to perfection. Think about love and weddings. What colours spring to mind? For us, it has to be red and white. Red is the colour of passion and white symbolises purity and of course wonderful wedding dresses. And these colours aren’t just for brides and grooms wanting to add an English twist to their wedding, but also for those who want to inject colour and make a bold statement on their big day.
Now for the flowers, and the most popular wedding flower of all time – the rose. It’s no surprise that this flower has become a firm favourite amongst brides with it being a symbol of love, as well as the national flower of England. Red roses are a classic bridal accessory and if you really want to run with the rose theme our Rose Suite at Smiths Hotel is the perfect choice, complete with a four poster bed, this luxurious room is fit for a princess.
What to drink on your St Georges’ themed wedding day? It has to be Miami Vice! Don’t be fooled with the tropical sounding name, this cocktail is perfect for your red and white wedding theme and is a fruity combination of Strawberry Daiquiri and Pina Colada. Call Smiths Hotel on 01461 337007 to pre-order your cocktails and toast St George’s Day in style on your wedding day.
If you’re heading to a wedding and want to treat the bride and groom to a special ‘made in England’ wedding gift we have a great range to choose from at our Gretna Green Visitor Centre. Alongside our impressive collection of Scottish gifts, we recommend our Dartington Crystal glasses. We particularly love the stunning prosecco glasses in this range, which can be engraved with a personal message for the bride and groom and are timeless keepsakes.
At Gretna Green our Wedding Team are here to help you personalise your special day, no matter what theme you chose! If you would like to discuss your wedding ideas with a friendly member of our Wedding Team, you can email email@example.com or call 01461 336001.
Getting married on St George’s Day? We’d love to hear how you celebrated your big day so please leave a comment below. The team at Gretna Green would like to wish our neighbours a very happy St. George’s Day.

GO GREEN FOR ST. PATRICK’S DAY
We’d would like to join our friends from across the Irish Sea and celebrate St Patrick’s Day on Saturday 17th March. Here are our top 5 ways to commemorate St Paddy’s Day with food, drink and gifts from Gretna Green:
- Sample some Irish Whisky – Our Whisky and Gifts Shop at Gretna Green is home to a range of both famous and unusual blends of malt whiskies. So whether you prefer Scottish or Irish whisky, raise a glass to St Patrick’s Day!
- Go green – go all out with green face paint, green hair dye and green clothing or opt for the more subtle green accessory – we have a range of gorgeous green items to choose from including green tartan, coats, scarves, gloves and bags. Getting married? Why not incorporate an Irish theme into your wedding with one of our stunning Celtic rings.
- Irish food – the only day when green food dye is acceptable is St Patrick’s day! So you can either turn your family meal green or join us at Gretna Hall for a meal that has been given the seal of approval from our Irish friends – traditional leek and potato soup, followed by smoked salmon or steak and finished off with a Bailey’s Irish Cream coffee – delicious! To book a table visit www.gretnahallhotel.com/contact/ or call 01461 338257.
- Throw an Irish themed party – the Irish certainly know how to party so why not join them with an Emerald Isle style party. Think Irish flags, shamrock confetti and fancy dress!
Happy St Patrick’s Day or “La Fheile Padraig” from the team at Gretna Green!

An exclusive behind-the-scenes look in to the Smiths Hotel Kitchen
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes in a 2 AA Rosette restaurant?
Documentary television gives us a few ideas, but here at Smiths, we’re probably not what you expected!
No we don’t have a kitchen as big as our restaurant, in fact, very few hotels and restaurants actually do. You would be amazed at how much more efficient a kitchen can be when it is smaller, well-managed and has a great team inside. A bit like a pocket watch… it may be small in size, but it keeps perfect time! Here at Smiths, we are extremely lucky, to not only have a talented team of chefs and assistants working in our restaurant, but a fantastic groups of head chefs, who continually work, not just to develop our menu and our taste bubs, but to nurture the future talents of their team – with some of our must luxurious menus coming from their culinary genius minds!
Locally sourced meats and fresh produce
So what makes our food taste so good… well that’s simple. We buy locally and try to use as many locally-sourced and grown ingredients as we possibly can! Sure… not everything we make has come from Dumfries and Galloway or bordering Cumbria, but we certainly make sure to use as much produce as possible from as close as possible. Take our meat, for example, mostly this is sourced from nearby butcher’s here in the Borders, but our Head Chef also rears his own premium livestock which he expertly butchers and prepares fresh for Smiths! You can’t get much more locally sourced than that!
As well as our meat and veg, we are very lucky to have a talented pastry chef here at Smiths, who along with her assistant chef, creates some beautiful hand-made desserts – from chocolate fondant and croquembouche to cherry sorbets and miniature cakes for our afternoon teas. If you haven’t tried our Afternoon Teas, by the way, then you genuinely don’t know what you are missing!
When our chefs are not working away in the kitchen, making food dreams come true, they are out and about in the community, working with schools and other community outreach organisations to bring basic culinary and advanced cooking skills to everyone. We are exceptionally proud of the work our team do and the effort and passion that they put in to this extra work!
A team effort
We can’t forget the other half of a successful restaurant and kitchen and that’s the lovely team of waitresses and waiters and the organisers, who ensure that you get what you ordered, how you want, while its hot! Without their careful organisation skills and speed, there wouldn’t be the perfect hand-off between chef and diner!
When are you joining us
If all of this has tantalised your taste buds and made your mouth water, then don’t deny your senses… come and join us for some delicious food soon! Throughout January, you can enjoy a tasty 20% off all food, including our Bar Menu, Tea-Time Menu, Sunday lunch and A La Carte. So what are you waiting for… book a table by calling us on 01461 337007 or simply pop in past! Remember to ask your server when you order about the 20% off deal, so it can be applied to your bill.
See you soon,
